The Browns have gotten their roster down to the league mandated 53 players to get ready for the 2011 regular season. While there still may be moves done as late as Tuesday (and perhaps even until week two), the bulk of the roster is set. The most notable and equally disappointing step was placing free-agent RB Brandon Jackson on IR with his toe injury. Jackson was given $4.5 million to come be the change-of-pace and 3rd down specialist back to complement Peyton Hillis and spread his knowledge of the the West Coast Offense. His play against his former team, Green Bay, was promising, but alas turf toe has claimed itself another victim. Jackson’s status allowed the Browns to keep undrafted phenom (and occasional fumbler) Armond Smith on the 53 man roster, rather than try and pass him through waivers to the practice squad. That gives the Browns 3 tailbacks in Hillis, Smith, and Montario Hardesty.

The remaining cuts following Thursday night’s pre-season finale against the Bears include DB Coye Francies, QB project Jarrett Brown, and LB Brian Smith. Six players released that were resigned to the practice squad include RB Quinn Porter, WR Rod Windsor, FB Tyler Clutts, and OLs Jarrod Shaw and Dominic Alford. In addition, the Browns were awared three players off waivers from other teams. They are QB Thaddeus Lewis (STL), LB Quinton Spears (MIA), and DL Emanuel Stephens (ATL). Guess the Jarrett Brown experiment is over.

At the time this is going to press, The Plain Dealer is reporting that the Browns have signed FA OL Artis Hicks, whom entered the league 10 years ago as an undrafted FA to the Eagles. (Hmmm…who used to work there then?)
